What happens after?

Alright, you die, what happens next to your "self"? Is there a "self" (soul,etc...), or are you just dead, left to decay, reincarnation, etc...?? Thoughts and ideas?

What happens to me after I die? What happened to me before I was born? Anyway, what's this "self" we're talking about? When did that come into existence? I mean, other then when you want to arbitrarily decide it did, when, exactly, did it - you- begin to exist?

Empiricyst - Let's just take it from the here and now, from this day, what do you imagine happens after you die? A few different theories have popped up *thank you gnosis, and DA*, but looking at it from the here and now, not concerned so much with where we came from *however valid that may be, just looking for different beliefs and customs*
Gnosis - so that's it? Your just left to rot or burn, etc..? You just see black? Well obviously you don't "see" but, your just nothing? So when you die, it's kind of like you become infinity, as in "almost impossible to imagine". Seeing as you can't imagine "nothing" which your saying is what happens after we die correct? Or am I off the path?

no, you are not 'nothing' you can be different things food, dust, a rotting corpse, ect. unless the 'you' that you are describing means consciousness. in that case, yes, you simply cease to exist.

I've always kinda wanted to be buried, not in a cemetary in a casket, but just a foot or two underground out in a forest or something. That way my rotting body, which I'll have no use of any longer, can at least be used as food and nutrients for various insects, scavengers, and plants... It seems a shame to let all of that perfectly good organic matter sit in a casket indefinitely, not being used at all.

And now, slightly more on-topic...

My feeling on the whole death issue is, "Why care?" You'll never really be able to know, so why worry your precious little head about it? We'll all find out for certain soon enough...

My thoughts on this subject really have very little philosophical bearing.

Since I was a kid and lost my grandfather and pet dog in the same month I've had a funny little notion of "Heaven" or "life after death". My grandfather used to come take our dog out hunting all the time - those two were best friends. So I assume that when grandpa went he called his dog to be with him and they are spending eternity doing what they loved to do the most - wandering around the woods.

My other grandfather was the protector of the family. So I assume he is somewhere watching over each of us - again, doing what he loved to do the most.

Like I said, not much philosophy involved here - but that's my thought.
